Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt

This revised edition of The Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt was made possibleand encouraged by Claudia Schaab of Facts On File. The work was greatlyaided by Stephen M. Bunson, who is an inspiration. Thanks are also owed toseveral individuals for their generous assistance in the completion of thiswork. Among them are: Steve Beikirch; Thierry Ailleret; John Lavender of Historical Coins, Ltd.; and Rosa DiSalvo of Hulton/Getty.

Writing this encyclopedia and then revising and expand-ing the scope of this work has been a genuine pleasureand privilege. The ancient Egyptians have fascinated cen-turies of human beings who have glimpsed or visitedtheir splendid ruins along the Nile. The words of theseancients ring with a profound knowledge concerninghuman aspirations and ideals. Such wisdom kept theEgyptians vital and prospering for 3,000 years andbequeathed remarkable concepts to the generations tofollow them.

The history of Egypt provides an overall view of thenation in good times and in bad. The entries on religion, social development, temples, the military, and art, amongothers, give details about specific eras and accomplish-ments, but the haunting beauty of the Egyptians them-selves can be found especially in the biographical entrieson royal and common individuals who spent their livesserving the land and the spiritual heritage of the NileValley. These individuals lived and died, laughed andcried thousands of years ago, but they would prosper if transplanted into the modernworld.

They possessed aprofound sense of cooperation in labors, of appreciationfor the beauty of their homeland, and a unique awarenessof the “other,” the presence of the spiritual aspects of human existence on the Nile. The hours spent research-ing the ancient Egyptians have expanded my own hori-zons, and I am grateful for the experience.
